Our St. John dental office takes pride in treating patients of all ages. We’ve treated patients as young as 2 and as old as 102. Our dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants use gentle and preventive care techniques to help you and your family keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime. We can help start your child’s dentistry experience off on the right foot or assist you and your loved ones with complex dental issues.
Your child should start getting regular checkups and cleanings as soon as their first tooth appears, or no later than their first birthday. These early appointments will allow us to make sure their mouth is developing correctly, plus we can find and treat any problems before they become a major issue. Regular preventive dental care is great for everyone, but especially children since the enamel doesn’t fully harden until age 14.
A child’s back teeth are very vulnerable to developing decay because their deeply grooved surfaces make them the perfect place for plaque and bacteria to gather, plus they can easily be missed while brushing. Thankfully, we can keep these teeth safe just by applying a sealant. We literally paint on a thin, clear layer of dental plastic, and this provides an invisible barrier against anything that would harm the enamel. The procedure only takes a few minutes, is 100% painless, and sealants have been shown to last for about 10 years.
Smiles of all ages can greatly benefit from fluoride, but it’s particularly helpful for children who are still forming their brushing habits. During your child’s cleanings, we’ll briefly cover their teeth with a highly-concentrated fluoride solution that will replenish all the minerals in their enamel that have been stripped away by plaque and bacteria. This will drastically lower their risk for cavities between appointments, plus it can aid in the overall development of their bite as well.
While our main goal is to completely prevent cavities, should your child ever develop one, we have an easy solution that can take care of it right away. With a tooth-colored filling, we use a composite resin to replace any damaged enamel, and it will be shaded to perfectly blend with your child’s tooth. That way, the final restoration won’t stick out in the smile, and your child won’t have to worry about friends or teachers noticing their dental work.
Pretty much every sport, regardless of whether or not it involves contact, poses the risk of dental injuries for children. But, a mouthguard can drastically lower that possibility so young athletes can stay safe and their parents can breathe a little easier on the sidelines. We can provide 100% custom-made mouthguards that fit more comfortably and securely than anything you can buy on your own, plus it will be specially-shaped to your child’s mouth to deliver unmatched protection from unexpected (or expected!) impacts.
If you have a child with mental, physical, behavioral, or sensory special needs, then you don’t need us to tell you that dental care, both at home and in the office, can be a challenge. At Creating Smiles, our goal is to make visiting the dentist nice and easy for both special children and their parents, and we’re able to do so thanks to our years of experience and state-of-the-art facility. Just give us a call, tell us about your child, and we’ll make any accommodations necessary to ensure a productive and stress-free appointment.
