Taking the Stress Out of Tooth Extractions in Valparaiso and St. John, Indiana

As simple as it seems, extracting a tooth can be the best treatment option if the tooth in question sustained major trauma, is decayed beyond repair, or needs to be removed to make space in preparation for braces or Invisalign. At Creating Smiles, PC, we have the ability to treat a wide range of dental problems, and can often repair badly damaged teeth. However, a tooth extraction may also be a good option if the damage is too extensive and the tooth is liable to affect surrounding teeth. While we can understand how the idea of a tooth extraction might make you nervous, our team will go the extra mile to make the procedure as quick and painless as possible. We offer several types of sedation to keep you relaxed throughout your appointment.

We can provide same-day care for patients who are experiencing severe oral pain. Contact us today.

Situations that Might Require a Tooth Extraction

There are many different situations in which a tooth extraction might be necessary for your health and comfort. These include:

  • Having a tooth that is on the verge of cracking
  • Having a large cavity that is starting to spread to one or more surrounding teeth
  • Sustaining physical trauma that has cracked or broken the tooth enamel beyond repair
  • You need more room in your mouth for orthodontic treatment or a new denture
  • Having a stubborn baby tooth that won’t fall out, which prevents the adult tooth from erupting

Do Tooth Extractions Hurt?

Regardless of whether you choose a sedation option that allows you to stay awake or sleep through the procedure, you will not feel any pain during the extraction. The most you will feel is some pressure, and this is normal. For after, we’ll prescribe pain relief medication to help you recover comfortably in the following days. If you still experience pain for a couple of days after, be sure to contact our office in St. John or Valparaiso right away.

Recovering from Your Tooth Extraction

Immediately after your tooth extraction, you will need to bite down on a pad of gauze for the next 45 minutes to an hour to facilitate blood clotting. To avoid disrupting the clot, do not swish water around in your mouth or drink anything from a straw. Do not drink alcohol, smoke, or run your tooth brush over the socket for at least 3 days. In addition, avoid vigorous exercise or other activity for about 24 hours after your extraction to keep your blood pressure down. Increased blood pressure can cause the extraction site to start bleeding.
